What's new in Thredbo for Winter 2008 Posted: Wednesday, 9 April 2008

New Snow Groomer: Thredbo added a new snow groomer to the family and the resort now boasts the most modern and technologically advanced fleet in Australia. Coming in at $500,000 the new Kassbohrer 600 winch cat, is more efficient and user friendly.
It is packed full of features that make it a dream to operate. It has touch screen operations and all the functions are on one joystick, but the best part is, it uses the latest technology in emission control, so this machine is very green. What this means to skiers and boarders is more super smooth tracks of corduroy in more places.
Discounted lift prices: In line with previous years Thredbo is offering discounted lift tickets in June. No matter how much snow or how many lifts are open, the multi day tickets are discounted. New for winter 2008 Thredbo is offering those same rates in springtime. So from September 15th you get a price rewind to June pricing, for example a two day adult lift pass is just $129. New webcams: You can now check out even more areas around the resort with the installation of three new web cams making a total of eight resort cameras. You can now view: -Friday Flat -Cruiser -Basin -Central Spur -Village Square -Bottom of Kosciuszko Express -Mountain view from village
Property news: Another good year for Thredbo property sales. In the calendar year to December 2007, close to $27 million worth of real estate changed hands, ranging from new luxury apartments to older style dwellings.
The 50 year head lease is now signed and the conversion to Torrens Title has been successfully achieved bringing Thredbo into line with the property system widely used throughout NSW. Kosciuszko Thredbo is now turning its attention to planning for significant reinvestment in the village and mountain infrastructure that will cement Thredbo’s position as the number one year round alpine resort.
Retail: The ever buzzing retail precinct has added a new shop, Ripcurl Thredbo Shop. This is the first mountain Rip Curl concept store in the Southern Hemisphere and it is right here in Thredbo. The concept store will be replacing Chill Factor and is owned and managed by local identities Reggae and Amanda Ellis. The store is stocking everything including bags, watches, casual wear, footwear and ski wear over winter. They will also be selling bikinis and boardies over the summer, but no wet suits or surf boards, just yet!
Gear for hire: Thredbo Sports Equipment Hire will have you looking good on the snow with around $500,000 invested in new clothing, ski and snowboard equipment.
This year you will find plenty of shiny new equipment across the kids, recreational and executive ranges including 1000 new pairs of skis, 600 pairs of ski boots and 400 pieces of new clothing (parka/pants).
For the boarders there’s 200 snowboards and 110 pairs of snowboard boots to choose from. There is also a variety of new helmets, snowshoes and après boots on offer.
Thredbo Pro Am: This is a great event that can involve, well everyone really. Happening 16-17 August, day one you race as an individual and your best time is put into a computer and teams are formed to race the next day.
Sign up in one of five categories - ski instructor, professional skier, property owner and or club member, staff member and or resident of Thredbo or locality, a female skier or skier age 55 and over.
Once the teams are formed guests bid for teams in a Calcutta auction, with the winning team’s bidder getting 30% of the money raised in the auction. All proceeds go to two fab causes Disabled Winter Sport Australia and Thredbo Early Childhood Centre.
Greening Thredbo: Thredbo understands the unique nature of the environment around us, so in conjunction with residents, guests and local businesses, we are pitching in to ensure its sustainable commercial and ecological future.
As part of this, Kosciuszko Thredbo is currently rolling out an Environment Management System (EMS) with the plan to have it in place for winter 08.
The EMS is based on the international standard and covers all operational areas of Kosciuszko Thredbo's business. The EMS will detail particular area’s operations and how they can manage their potential impact on the environment. For example, the Thredbo Alpine Hotel plan outlines waste reduction and water conservation measures that will be implemented over and above those already in place.
At this stage, the EMS is for Kosciuszko Thredbo only, it is proposed to be offered to other Thredbo businesses in the near future.
The team at Thredbo actively engages in resource conservation, renewable energy use, recycling, composting, and other forms of waste reduction in addition to wildlife habitat preservation and environmental education. We can all do our bit for a better world.
