Here it is Townsville, the long awaited look at what the city heart could look like after a huge injection of funds expected to be in order of $100 million.
A waterfront plaza between Victoria Bridge and Flinders Mall will become the heart of a revamped Flinders St which will include two-way traffic, nine-metre wide footpaths and improved public transport facilities. The unpopular Flinders St East makeover will be removed, in preference for a return to its heritage past.
There are also provisions for a new pedestrian bridge connecting Wickham St and Flinders St East with Palmer St. Council hopes to have a final design in December with construction to begin in 2010..
