Melbourne Zoo Dokkoon's baby arrives!

Melbourne Zoo - 'Baby' as she is fondly known as was finally coaxed onto the scales by keepers yesterday, weighing in at a whopping 111kg.
Baby, was born early Saturday morning after mother Dokkoon's 22-month pregnancy.
She is bonding well with her mother and feeding regularly.
Melbourne Zoo staff will soon select a name to match her personality and behaviour.
Dokkoon was artificially inseminated on March 27, with sperm donated by Bong Su, Melbourne Zoo’s long term resident Asian Elephant bull. That first AI attempt was successful, so she is due to calf between December 2009 and January 2010.
Dokkoon is one of three young Asian Elephants that arrived in Melbourne in November 2006, as part of a joint initiative with Taronga Zoo to establish a regional conservation breeding program for this endangered species. Taronga Zoo imported four females and a young bull at that time.
With entertainment for families being expensive, a trip to the Melbourne Zoo is a low cost of around $62, make the most of the experience by getting tickets early to witness this incredible event and stay the weekend at Rydges Melbourne.
