Oktoberfest 2013
The Harmonie German Club’s OKTOBERFEST is Canberra’s annual celebration of German culture. Each year approximately 10,000 attend this growing event which is believed to be the largest Oktoberfest celebration held in Australia.
In 2013, Oktoberfest Canberra will celebrate the German people and their culture and the immense contribution they have made to the life of our national capital. The Canberra community will once again embrace German culture through the traditional food, wine, schnapps, beer and music provided across this weekend of entertainment. For Oktoberfest 2013, the Harmonie German Club will also encourage German cultural dress, increase the design and decoration of the event, acknowledge German design and engineering through displays of German vehicles, etc. And it will call out to its community to bring together a digital photographic history of the building of Canberra from a German perspective.
The Harmonie German Club was established on the 9th of June 1961 and is situated on Jerrabomberrah Avenue in Narrabundah. It was built as a cultural club by and for the many German immigrants and diplomatic community residents of Canberra as a place for sharing and retaining their cultural heritage. The Jennings Germans were major contributors to its establishment. In 1951, skilled labour shortages were affecting the building of Canberra and as such building company A.V Jennings brought 150 carpenters from Germany in order to fulfill their large housing contract in Canberra. On arrival, these workers were housed in hostels and they built their lives in Canberra as they built Canberra.
The Harmonie German Club is one of the most active cultural clubs still operating in Canberra.
Rydges Lakeside Canberra is within a 15-minute drive to the Exhibition Park with easy access to the city's shopping and restaurant districts.

Remembrance Day
Remembrance Day (11 November) marks the anniversary of the armistice which ended the First World War (1914–18). Each year Australians observe one minute’s silence at 11 am on 11 November, in memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts.
The National Remembrance Day Ceremony commences at 10.15 am. It will include a formal wreathlaying and will be attended by many high-level dignitaries and diplomats. Australian’s Federation Guard and the Band of the Royal Military College will be on parade. After the ceremony, families often place red poppies beside the names of relatives on the Memorial’s Roll of Honour, which lists over 102,000 Australians who have died in war.
