Challenge Wanaka is renowned as one of the world’s most scenic iron distance triathlons but don’t let looks deceive you! It also features one of the world’s toughest and most honest courses which is set against stunning alpine backdrop of New Zealand’s Southern Alps. Challenge Wanaka is part of New Zealand’s largest triathlon festival, featuring events for all ages and abilities in one of the most spectacular settings possible, the shores of lake Wanaka.
Challenge Wanaka is the race of a lifetime and the perfect opportunity to compete and holiday in paradise. Join over 1,500 top professional and age group athletes from all over the world for the 3.8km swim in crystal clear waters, the 180km bike taking in two alpine lakes and the 42.2km run which is 75% off-road along the water’s edge.
The festival kicks off with Junior Challenge Wanaka for budding triathletes aged six to fifteen. There’s also a 5km Charity Fun Run and Swim the Course during the week as wells a thrilling criterion-style sprint race before the highlight event.
The week culminates with the flagship Challenge Wanaka. Thousands of spectators line the route and the finish line is in the heart of the lake Wanaka township with a fun finish line party with music and fireworks to welcome the athletes home late into the night.
Challenge Wanaka has fast grown into a ‘bucket list’ race for athletes from all over the world. The resort town has plenty of accommodation for all budgets and there’s heaps for family and friends to do when not supporting or competing, ranging from hiking in Mt Aspiring National Park to mountain biking to just lounging by the lake.
