Auckland Retail Strips
High Street, Vulcan Lane & The Chancery
About five minutes walk from Rydges, High Street is Queen Street’s ultra hip little sister. Packed with chic boutiques, local and international designer labels, bookshops and trendy cafes, this is where Aucklanders in the know get their retail fix. Take a table and people-watch in quaint, café-filled Vulcan Lane, drool at the designer boutiques in the newer ‘Chancery’ precinct directly behind High Street, or replenish your wardrobe with gorgeous gear from High Street itself.
Karangahape Road
Fondly known by the locals as K’ Road, this once-seedy but now-funky street harbours some of Auckland’s more ‘alternative’ retail outlets. Stretching from upper Queen Street to the start of Ponsonby Road, it’s worth a wander along this eclectic collection of clothing shops, second-hand stores, cafes and record stores. Here, you’ll see plenty of local and colourful characters and you’ll pick up some unique and interesting bargains along the way. Great if you’re on a budget.
Newmarket
Proclaiming itself as shopping for the seriously fashionable, Newmarket is made up of several smaller shopping ‘precincts’. The main strip is Broadway, which boasts several big name designers, plus numerous home ware stores, jewellers, department stores, cafes and shoe shops galore. Auckland’s well heeled and stylish tend to shop at nearby Nuffield Street (the divine, designer-filled new retail district opposite the mall ‘277’) or the very hip and expensive Teed Street (turn left at Starbucks half-way along Broadway).
Parnell
This charming shopping precinct offers Auckland’s largest collection of art galleries, as well as an upmarket assortment of shops and boutiques. Ten minutes from Downtown Auckland on ‘The Link’ bus, Parnell is the preferred haunt of the well to do and ladies who lunch. Browse the gorgeous galleries for some New Zealand art or explore the many quaint alleyways
