Boggo Road Gaol Museum

Since its decommissioning in 1989, the notorious maximum security Boggo Road Gaol has attracted a new sort of temporary inmate, that of visitors. The gaol was reopened as a museum in 1992 and today is a stark and occasionally imposing heritage complex. Controversy has always been an integral part of Boggo Road’s history and the exhibits and excellent guided tours do not shy away from or gloss over its often-violent past. A visit does however provide a fascinating glimpse into a world rarely seen by most people and is a powerful reminder of contemporary social history. You will need to make a booking if you wish to join a guided tour.
