Opened in 1858, the City Botanic Gardens are located in the heart of the city and flank the Brisbane River on its northern side. Given the semi tropical climate, the gardens feature some spectacular specimens of both native and introduced species. The shade provided by the many mature trees attracts picnickers in their droves. If the urge to explore overrides the desire to sit around all day and watch the world drift past, visitors can wander along the Mangrove Boardwalk, amble through the Bamboo Grove or simply watch the boats drift down the river.
The city also has another much larger Brisbane Botanic Garden at Mt Coot-tha. Spread over 52 hectares; its also well worth a visit.
