"Ladies and gentlemen, well may we say 'God Save the Queen', because nothing will save the Governor-General"
That epic and acerbic line was delivered to the waiting press and, err, one Norman Gunston by the then Prime Minister Gough Whitlam from the steps of Old Parliament House after his dismissal during the 1975 constitutional crisis. First opened in 1927 and used until 1988 as Australia’s Parliament, this impressive heritage listed building is now open and popular with visitors. Highlights include the House of Representatives and Senate chambers along with the Prime Minister’s suite. Guided and self-guided tours are available and the changing exhibitions provide further insight into the workings and character of this colorful and sometimes turbulent establishment.
