Whilst many cities have lost live music venues to the insidious rise of poker machines and bad real estate development, Melbourne continues to fiercely champion live music in all its occasional scungy glory.
For over 125 years, The Esplanade Hotel in St Kilda, known universally as The Espy, has been the spiritual home for live music in Melbourne. As unpretentious as it gets the 'great white magnet' often showcases 40 bands a week over 3 stages with many of the shows free of charge.
Their website has the following advice in the FAQ section Is there a dress code at the Espy? Reply = No, just wear clothes.
