‘Doing the Block’ was a popular local phrase used from the 1870s until to the beginning of WW1, to describe the popular act of promenading along Melbourne’s most prestigious shopping arcade.
Melbourne embraced the European tradition of sophisticated and specialised shopping arcades.
Today a historic and beguiling network of alleys and arcades are still rich with retail and culinary treasures. One of the best and most ornate arcades is located off Little Collins Street. The Block Arcade and Block Place are packed with great shops and intimate cafes.
