Established in 1846, the Royal Botanic Gardens has literally grown to become one of the finest examples of a formal garden anywhere in the world. Situated beside the Yarra River, the garden now boasts over 50,000 major individual plants from 12,000 different species. The immaculately arranged and sculpted gardens along with its lush and expansive lawns are particularly popular with local families and picnickers. The gardens also play home to a surprisingly wide array of indigenous wildlife including waterfowl and flying foxes. If the weather is nice, this is a top spot to sit back, relax and watch the world drift past.
