Royal Exhibition Building & Melbourne Museum

Ipod friendly guides | Email to a friend | Print article

Which was the first Australian building to win UNESCO world heritage listing? The Sydney Opera House? Nope, this distinction goes the Royal Exhibition Building. It was built for the 1880 International Exhibition and is a stunning late Victorian architectural edifice.
The site of Australia’s first parliament and daily tours operate from the Melbourne Museum located next door.
The $300 million dollars spent on creating the Melbourne Museum was money well spent. It’s the epitome of a modern museum with a distinct sense of style and is a great interactive educational experience The wide range of exhibits includes everything from a section on Australia’s wonder horse Phar Lap to a recreation of the set from the TV show Neighbours.

Both sites combined are well worth a visit
