From the Batavia sunk in 1629 to the national euphoria created by the Australia II famous America’s Cup victory in 1983, Western Australia has always had ‘salt in its veins. A magnificent new museum situated on Victoria Quay offers a modern perspective of the State’s nautical obsession whilst the Shipwreck Gallery located in a separate location in nearby Cliff Street offers a historical interpretation by highlighting some of the remarkable heritage finds from a number of ships wrecked along WA’s unforgiving coastline. For those that do not suffer claustrophobia, the museum is also home to the submarine “HMS Ovens”.
