Fremantle Prison & Tour

Ipod friendly guides | Email to a friend | Print article

The fascinating and occasionally macabre Fremantle Prison is one of Western Australia’s key heritage sites. Built by convict labour during the 1850’s it continued to operate as prison continuously for over 130 years prior to its eventual closure as a place of incarceration in 1991. To get a real insight about the conditions that inmates endured or the characters that were confined within its walls, a range of excellent guided tours are available. After viewing the gallows and solitary confimenet cells, the many stories concerning prison humour are a relief.
A popular tour involves descending 20 metres into a vast array of tunnels and exploring by boat.
