“You owe me five farthings say the bells of St Martins”. – Oranges & Lemons

The bells in question from the traditional nursery rhyme are in fact no longer in the famous London church, St Martins in the Field, rather they are the centrepiece in one of the world’s largest musical instruments – The Swan Bells. Situated next to the Swan River in a custom built and architecturally significant modern bell tower, 12 of the original bells, recast in mid 17th century, were donated to Western Australia as a bicentennial gift in 1988.
Apart from bell ringing demonstrations, the complex houses an interesting collection of clocks, telescopes and time pieces showing how time was ‘kept’ prior to the advent of the “digital watch’
