Taronga Park Zoo is a leading example of a progressive modern day zoo. Established in 1919, over time its focus has shifted fundamentally from keeping animals in small cage captivity as a simple amusement for humans to now helping to ensure their long-term survival via better education and research programs.
The zoo occupies 43 acres of pristine harbour foreshore and its elevated position offers spectacular views of the city skyline and Harbour Bridge. The zoo is home to many rare indigenous species as well as more traditional favourites such as elephants and giraffes. It is easily accessible by ferry from Circular Quay. One popular option is to take the cable car from the Taronga wharf up to the zoo entrance and then back down the hill.
