THE RYDGES POST

Drink/Dine ian 12/25/2012

Our Christmas lunch is always wonderful and memorable… turkey, ham, seafood and a chilled wine or two… but I thought today I would look back at my best dining experience of 2012…

…to put the following into perspective, there were a number of culinary highlights this year like l’Epopee in Montparnasse, Paris and Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen in London… but, drum roll rather than a bread roll, please…

…It’s not often that you have a meal so good that it stands out head-and-shoulders over the other thousand or so breakfasts, lunches and dinners consumed in a year, but Palm Cove’s Reef House Boutique Resort & Spa’s degustation dinner wins that gong easily. The seven courses (with wines in brackets) were:

Smoked Queensland Spanner Crab with Avocado Salsa (Reef House Tropical Teaser)

Seared Scallops & Twice Cooked Tableland Pork Belly with Mareeba Pineapple Chilli Jam, Micro Herbs (Palliser Estate Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, New Zealand)

Pan Roasted Quail with Carrot Puree, Aged Balsamic Reduction (Ninth Island Pinot Noir, Piper’s River, Tasmania)

Atherton Tableland’s Lime Sorbet & Redbank Emily Chardonnay Pinot Noir Cleanser

North Queensland Tiger Prawn Risotto with Saffron, Braised Leek, Fresh Basil (Pierro Chardonnay – Margaret River, Western Australia)

Prosciutto Wrapped Black Angus Eye Fillet with Parsnip Puree, Wilted Spinach, Green Beans, Parmesan Crisp & Red Wine Jus (Pepperjack Shiraz – Barossa Valley, South Australia)

Vanilla Bean Brulee with Caramelised Cane Sugar (Vasse Felix Cane Cut - Margaret River, Western Australia)

Merry Christmas!
