The Queen’s Birthday long weekend in June sees the fantastic Rutherglen Winery Walkabout festival. This is one of the best festivals in Australia and is Victoria’s original wine festival, starting in 1974. It will happen on June 7 and June 8 this year and for a full program of events, entertainment, tastings, activities and bus shuttles (they shuttle from Albury), click here.
Even if you are not a wine buff, this is a great weekend. Rutherglen is an historical, charming town that offers visitors the warmest of welcomes. There will be gourmet food, fast food, comfort food and food with a variety of ethnic background and influence. There will be activities for the kiddies, live entertainment and picnic spots. There are four routes to choose from as well as special hosted breakfasts and dinners plus community events like the Great Australian Barrel Rolling Competition, the Infamous Rutherglen Grape Stomp, the Rutherglen Rotary Country Fair, the Rutherglen Farmers Market and The Sunday Session with a live band. And, of course, if you are a wine buff/drinker – bonus! There are a number of excellent wineries and a number of excellent wine styles to sample plus competitions, workshops and master classes. Oh! And if you are wondering about the photo, dressing in costume is not compulsory but some folk do like to do so!
If you are planning on attending the Rutherglen Winery Walkabout festival and would like your accommodation based in Albury (only about 40 scenic minutes from Rutherglen), Rydges Albury will also make you welcome.
