THE RYDGES POST
I love the annual Archibald, Wynne and Sulman prizes at the Art Gallery of NSW, especially the Archibald to see how artists interpret and present subjects who are already part of many of our lives. The award is often controversial but always engaging and this year’s winner is Del Kathryn Barton for her creative portrait of creative actor, Hugo Weaving. Here’s a link to that winning entry.
The exhibition runs until June 2 and there are guided tours daily at 3:00pm (and Monday to Friday at 12 noon and 1:00pm plus 7:15pm Wednesdays).
Every Wednesday evening until May 29 there will be Archibald Celebrity Events from 6:30pm to 7:00pm with guests including Richard Glover, David Williamson, the Hon Michael Kirby, Richard Morecroft and the Hon Nicola Roxon. More on those evening events here.
The photo above is one of my favourite landscape paintings – the 1919 Wynne Prize winner, Eliot Gruner and Spring Frost. While at the gallery it is always worth a wander through the permanent exhibitions.
