THE RYDGES POST
Loved it. An excellent film that does everything it sets out to do brilliantly. Cate Blanchett is amazing and has terrific support from Alec Baldwin, Sally Hawkins and (to my surprise) Andrew Dice Clay. On many levels it is Woody Allen paying homage to Tennessee Williams and A Streetcar Named Desire, but that is so up front it doesn’t jar. It is a terrific script in both character and dialogue and the direction confident and effortless. There’s not much ‘action’ as such but it is riveting for all of the 99 minutes. Occasionally Woody Allen seems to be painting by numbers, occasionally he produces a gem. In his necklace of 43 movies, this is one of the brighter gems.
