Just across the river from Brisbane’s CBD, South Bank is home to city’s cultural, recreational and entertainment scene.
There’s the vibrant Queensland Museum which has visiting exhibitions as well as permanent exhibits featuring whales, dinosaurs, snakes and crocodiles. Nearby is the Queensland Art Gallery with its impressive water feature and Australian and Aboriginal collections. At the State Library of Queensland you can trace your family tree, catch a classic movie or just access the internet. The Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) hosts some amazing temporary exhibitions as well as an impressive permanent collection. The Queensland Maritime Museum is at the Woolloongabba end of the Parklands and is home to many nautical relics including a WW2 frigate and a 1925 steam tug.
The South Bank Parklands cover some 17 hectares, stretching over a kilometre, and have been landscaped to reflect rainforest, lagoon and beach environments with The Arbour, a flower-covered walkway, meandering through the precinct. There’s Streets Beach, a unique man-made swimming beach, overlooking the Brisbane River with city skyline views. For a more bird’s eye view, you can hop on the 60m high Wheel of Brisbane.
There’s always something theatrically exciting happening at the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) and the Brisbane Convention Centre (next to Rydges) often hosts concerts/performances. The colourful, bustling and entertaining Collective Markets happen on weekends with more than 100 creative stall holders bringing photography, craft, collectibles and fashion to the precinct. There’s also the charming Lantern Village Market on Friday nights.
There are also myriad culinary options with more than 40 eateries offering a range of cuisine – French, Italian, Turkish, Japanese, Chinese, Thai, Mediterranean – there are budget options in cafes and bars as well as fine dining and there are barbeques for those who want to BYO.
From South Bank, if you want to explore the CBD, it is just a walk across Victoria Bridge to the Treasury Casino and Queen Street Mall etc. And, of course, Rydges South Bank is perfectly located for all your accommodation needs.
