Remember an Aussie pop star by the name of Richard Springthorpe? He will be appearing as Rick Springfield at Canberra’s Royal Theatre with a power rock band on October 13.
Springfield recently announced his first ever full solo Australian tour. The last tour was with the band, Zoot, in 1971. Back then he and the band had a hit with a terrific cover of The Beatles Eleanor Rigby. That's him on the right up top with Rick Brewer, Darryl Cottoin and Beeb Birtles.
He’s arguably best-known for his worldwide 1981 hit, Jessie’s Girl, but there a lot more strings to the bow of the lad who left Sydney’s western suburbs for a crack at the US market all those years ago.
Firstly – he has to be close to the best-looking 64-year-old performer doing the rounds - he looks even younger and fitter than a close sound-alike the same age, Bruce Springsteen. Springfield even wrote a song called ‘Bruce’ about people confusing their names.
He’s an actor, a singer, a songwriter, a producer, an author and a musician who plays guitar, keyboards and banjo. He’s been playing in bands since he was 13 years old. He won a Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Male Performance. He became a soap star and household name in the US with his role of Dr Noah Drake in General Hospital. He has been in shows like Hawaii Five-O and Californication.
Springfield married girlfriend, Barbara Porter, thirty years ago in her family’s church in Australia and they have two children who go by the name Springthorpe. His memoir, Late, Late at Night has been critically acclaimed as well as popular. In it he candidly writes about his battle with depression and his sex addiction. His first novel, Magnetic Vibrations, is getting great reviews before it hits the bookshops this month. He recently played slide guitar on Russel Morris’s latest album Van Dieman’s Land, which is currently charting Top 5 in Australia. Oh! And this year he got a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame for his contribution to music. An interesting chap indeed. You get the feeling he might just produce some of the best concerts of the year as well.
