The White Album Concert has been getting rave reviews and standing ovations and it is Canberra’s turn on Tuesday, July 22. 21 singers and musicians will take to the stage at the Canberra Theatre to bring the Beatles’ most complex, brilliant and beautifully flawed album to life.
The album was created after the Beatles had been to India for their transcendental experiences and before the bust up but both moods are reflected in the musical smorgasbord. There are ballads, hard rock numbers, solo genius and even a couple of songs calling out for attendance – apparently Ringo threw a hissy fit and stormed out because he demanded more solo stuff, which left Paul to play the drums on a couple of tracks.
This concert also has a Fab Four with 17 others in support. The Four are Chris Cheney (Living End), Phil Jamieson (Grinspoon), Tim Rogers (You Am I) and Josh Pike. It is an ambitious project but one that both works as a tribute to arguably the best album from history’s best band and as a brilliant concert in its own right.
They perform the album in track order and it flows incredibly... for those who can remember the album, the titles themselves will jog fond memories… and for newcomers… well, that’s what You Tube is all about.
Here is the 30 track set list in order: Back in the USSR; Dear Prudence; Glass Onion; Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da; Wild Honey Pie; The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill; While My Guitar Gently Weeps; Happiness is a Warm Gun; Martha My Dear; I’m So Tired; Blackbird; Piggies; Rocky Raccoon; Don’t Pass Me By; Why Don’t We Do It in the Road?; I Will; Julia; Birthday; Yer Blues; Mother Nature’s Son; Everyone’s Got Something to Hide Except Me and my Monkey; Sexy Sadie; Helter Skelter; Long, Long, Long; Revolution 1; Honey Pie; Savoy Truffle; Cry Baby Cry; Revolution 9; Good Night.
Oh! The concert is a sell-out and if you are visiting Canberra to see the show, Rydges Capital Hill can look after all your accommodation needs.
