THE RYDGES POST
The influential and respected New York Times has released its top 52 places in the world to visit in 2014 and Christchurch New Zealand has come in at Number 2. It says that “the city is experiencing a rebirth with creativity and wit – thanks to the ingenuity of its hardy residents”.
While the article acknowledges that there is still a way to go in rebuilding much of the central city, it specifically mentions how the surprising ways temporary use of space has brought life back to the city – like the Gap Filler program (creative ways to temporarily make public spaces useful and interesting), a dance floor with coin operated music and lights and a mini nine-hole golf course in vacant lots. Other initiatives singled out included the Greening the Rubble campaign, the Revival Bar being built inside shipping containers and the impressive transitional cardboard Christchurch Cathedral.
