Over the past year the SMH has been sending out its resident caffeine connoisseurs to research for their Sydney Morning Herald Good Cafe Guide 2014 and it found Cronulla’s top hot coffee spot. The guide is available with the SMH for $5 from selected newsagents on Saturday, June 21 or go online to the SMH Shop where it is $9.99.
They visited more than 300 cafes from north to south, east to west, tracking down wonderful venues - some with views of the ocean, some of parks, some in laneways and others in shopping arcades and basements. And they all had to have good coffee!
The Cronulla pick is Grind (Shop 4, 15 Surf Road – enter from Surf Lane) and it was also awarded the Local Hero Award for making a contribution to the wider community. Here’s what SMH had to say about Grind: This Cronulla institution needs no introduction for its devoted locals, but it's an absolute must for anyone visiting who's serious about coffee. We love the antique coffee pots lining the walls, the spoilt-for-choice coffee menu picked out on an old train station rollover board, and the breezy, come-as-you-are atmosphere. Try the cold drip, served in a brandy balloon spiked with a sphere of ice with an orange peel in the middle.
What more do you need from a coffee shop than great coffee, atmosphere plus quick and friendly service – and that’s what Grind has been serving up for the last 14 years.
