THE RYDGES POST
American Hustle is one of those rare films that looks like getting a lovely mix of terrific critical reviews, a bunch of awards and be totally accessible and popular with the general public.
American Hustle has been nominated for seven Golden Globe Awards, equal top with 12 Years a Slave. Both movies could do well as one is in the Drama category and the other in the Musical/Comedy.
Others in the mix are Nebraska with five nominations, and Gravity and Captain Phillips with four apiece. Tom Hanks must be favourite for Best Actor for his portrayal of Captain Phillips and while Sandra Bullock’s performance in Gravity was sensational, Australian Cate Blanchett was riveting in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine. Woody Allen, BTW, is the only award winner announced so far – he will be the recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award.
Relative newcomers like Christian Bale, Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle) are up against some serious ‘older’ competition with the likes of Helen Mirren, Bruce Dern, Jessica Lange, JonVoigt, Jacqueline Bisset, Al Pacino, Merryl Streep, Michael J. Fox and Judi Dench being nominated
