THE RYDGES POST
Once upon a time people were given a gold watch if they worked 50 years in the same job. Bert Newton has spent 60 years in the same job – entertaining Australians – but a gold watch wouldn’t seem right… nor would a gold i-phone. Channel Nine, however, has decided to give Moonface a present at 6:30pm on Saturday night – a one hour television reminiscing special titled: Happy 75th Bert! Celebrating a TV Legend.
‘Legend’ is a word bandied around pretty loosely these days but it sits comfortably with Albert Watson Newton. Bert started in radio as an announcer on 3XY at age 15 and seems to have never stopped working in radio, television or on stage since. Next month he takes on the role of DJ, Vince Fontaine, in the musical Grease.
Your humble blogger lived overseas for a few years, returning in 2002 with daughter aged six – she saw Bert for the first time and said, “Wow, who is that cool old dude?” Here are some of the shows he has hosted – numerous Logie nights (and won four Gold Logies himself), In Melbourne Tonight, The Don Lane Show, The Bert Newton Show, Good Morning Australia, New Faces, Ford Superquiz and Twenty to One… he’s really been a guest in our lounge rooms for a such long time and we probably all think he’s a pretty cool old dude. Yep, for he’s a jolly good fellow, and so say all of us!
