On the recent trip to Melbourne got to the National Gallery of Victoria to spend a while in Monet’s Garden. More than half a million people visit the real garden in Giverny outside Paris and after seeing this exhibition it is easy to see why. Monet said, “My garden is my most beautiful masterpiece” and that beautiful garden inspired many, many masterpieces on canvas.

Monet is known as the ‘father of French impressionism” and painting and gardening were his two obsessions but this marvellous exhibition also gives an insight into Monet the person – his relationships, his health and his social conscience.  It is interesting to see frustration and even guilt expressed in the paintings he did of the garden during World War One.

The exhibition runs until September 8 and is highly recommended.
