Mark “Frosty” Winterbottom with partner, Steven Richards, won the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 and, in doing so, won over another fan of the race.
Disclaimer – until this race you couldn’t have paid me to watch motor racing but this one coincided with my need to paint the living room so I flicked it on for some background television. As the laps mounted with commentary to fill me in on the rules, the drivers and the cars, I became hooked. And what a finish after six hours and 161 laps! Less than half a second separating first and second after more than 60 laps of Winterbottom and arch-rival Jamie Whincup being bumper to bumper. And this year Ford pipped Holden.
Congrats to the drivers, teams, race organisers and those who do the television coverage. The only downer was poor old Skippy who hopped onto the track and got cleaned up by Craig Russell driving a Nissan 20 laps into the race. Because Rydges Mt Panorama will probably be fully booked for 2014 sometime this week I have made a mental note – the living room can wait 12 months to get its second coat.
