Perth’s iconic His Majesty’s Theatre, or the Maj as it is affectionately known, is the only remaining working Edwardian theatre in Australia and is home to WA Ballet and WA Opera. It is the perfect venue to catch plays, comedy, dance, opera or an evening of cabaret Downstairs at the Maj. There’s something extra rewarding about soaking in the historic décor while enjoying a performance.
When the Maj opened in 1904 it was the largest theatre in Australia, seating 2584 people in three tiers. It also had the largest stage in Australia and was the first reinforced concrete building in Perth. The interior design was Edwardian horseshoe shape to bring the audience closer to the performers and there were some innovative features like four small waterfalls to provide cooling for patrons.
The theatre is has good disabled facilities and here’s a link to the official website.
His Majesty’s Theatre is at 815 Hay Street in the CBD and for all your accommodation needs, Rydges Perth is at 825 Hay Street.
