AJ Hackett in Cairns is Australia’s one & only bungy jump. It's not far from the city and it is a climb of some 196 steps to the man-made platform perched 50m (164 feet) above a pond.
It is certainly an adrenalin-packed experience but totally safe – as one of the team, Wayne, said, "it is about selling the illusion of danger".
It is a slick little operation with an energetic, welcoming team and a very cool vibe. Music pumps, the big screen videos are showing the thrills, there is a licensed bar and there are pheromones in the air.
The operation is also disability -friendly. Ian Chill, the Access & Equity Project Officer with Cairns Regional Council has done six bungy jumps in his wheelchair – the last one with a perfect backflip (some conditions apply for wheelchair bungy).
For an additional five dollars, jumpers can hire a costume – Spiderman, Batman, Superman, cow suit - that sort of thing. Apparently people become braver when they are pretending to be someone else. I have to say that the guy in the lime green Borat mankini did absolutely nothing for yours truly. If there had been horses present, they would have been frightened.
As well as bungy there is the Minjin Swing, the world’s fastest jungle swing, which looks gentler than bungy but it managed to generate a few screams from the participants I witnessed.
