You can catch the sensational rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar in Queenstown from May 14 to 24 at the Queenstown Memorial Centre.

While the subject matter is pretty much as old as time according to the Christian calendar, the rock opera hasn’t dated musically in the 43 years since Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice penned all those memorable hits – the title track along with Everything’s Alright, I Don’t Know How to Love Him and King Herod’s little showstopper.

What has changed since then is technology so contemporary lighting and video effects take the show to another level. In case you haven’t seen a production it covers the last seven days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth as seen through the eyes of Judas Iscariot.

While Rice & Webber were not religious, there’s nothing sacrilegious in the script/lyrics… it does portray the human, questioning side of Jesus, the fickleness of those close to him, the Roman rule of the day, the heartache for the woman who loves him and the motives of the man who betrays him.

And even if the story is of little interest, the rock music is strong and the theatrical dynamics take audiences on a beautifully paced journey.

For all your Queenstown accommodation needs, Rydges Lakeland Resort will make you welcome.
