Rydges Lakeland Resort Queenstown
Gravity is now playing at Reading Cinemas in Queenstown – it runs a perfectly paced 91 minutes and is rated M for survival themes, disturbing images and coarse language.
I’m not a fan of the ‘space’ movie genre – to me 2001 was a postcode, not an odyssey – so it was almost with reluctance that I took up the invitation from the other half to see Gravity. See, I thought I was being conned because she would go and see anything with George Clooney in it. She even used the old, ‘and you love Sandra Bullock’ line to try and get me interested. Yes, yes, usually Bullock is sexy and engaging but stuck in a spacesuit… really?
Here’s the story - Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney). But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone
First up – Sandra Bullock is brilliant – it is ‘her’ movie with excellent support from George. Many critics are saying Best Actress Academy Award and I wouldn’t be surprised… she takes the audience on her journey, physically and emotionally…but the movie itself is the star – beautifully directed and crafted, not a minute too short or long, stunning visual effects, a treat for all the senses and an emotional journey that just happens to be set in space… a space the audience actually enters.
People often say they don’t make movies like they used to – quite so - there has never been a movie made like this! It is exciting, moving, suspenseful and terrifying. 2013 has been a good year for movies and this is certainly one of the best.
