THE RYDGES POST
Sydneysiders and followers of the NRL would know that Sydney Airport is right in the heart of St George territory and the weekend served up a special game.
It was the Dragons third win on the trot and a nail biter with the final score 13-12 against Wests Tigers thanks to a Jamie Soward field goal in the 78th minute. It was also a historically significant game. This year marks fifty years since the St George grand final win over Wests that ended with John O’Gready’s famous photo of rival captains, Norm Proven and Arthur Summons, embracing, covered in mud, titled ‘Gladiators’. That pose is now at the centre of the modern premiership trophy.
The weekend’s game was played at the same ground, the SCG, and the trophy was in attendance, as were those two league greats, Proven and Summons. Lovely to see their friendship endure as well as the image.
