Going to see the Arctic Monkeys in New Zealand? The British band is playing arena shows in Auckland and Wellington on May 2 and May 3.

The Arctic Monkeys have been around for more than a decade but it is only recently that mainstream audiences have begun to see how brilliant they are as musicians. They originally started playing live and gave away CD recordings at the live shows – the audience shared the songs and the fan base grew. Fans spread the word online, and the fan base grew. Their first two singles went to Number One in the UK immediately (I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor in October 2005 and When the Sun Goes Down, three months later). And the fan base grew some more… they recorded more material, had critical and chart success and started winning awards… the fan base grew and here they are, travelling the world, paying to packed house in big venues…

If people ask how you would describe the style/genre of Arctic Monkeys’ music, an easy answer would be to ask back, how would you describe the music of The Beatles? People have tried to pigeon-hole the Monkeys – ‘indie-rock’ is a favourite umbrella, but what denotes ‘independent rock’? Another genre given to the band is ‘post-punk’, which doesn’t say much either. Nor do the tags ‘garage rock’ or ‘psychedelic rock’ or ‘hip-hop rock’… best just go with the flow if you like the sound.  If you feel the need to capture the essence, quote lead vocalist Alex Turner commenting on the fifth album, AM… “like a Dr Dre beat, but we've given it an Ike Turner bowl-cut and sent it galloping across the desert on a Stratocaster.” He also said that the album was influenced by Outkast, Aaliyah and Black Sabbath with John Lennon influencing him lyrically. Which means it sounds like The Arctic Monkeys!

Tickets are fast approaching hens’ teeth status for shows at Vector Arena, Auckland on May 2 and at TSB Arena in Wellington on May 3. If you are travelling from out of town for the show, Rydges can look after all your accommodation needs in both Auckland and Wellington.
