THE RYDGES POST
Not many sleeps until it is this year's World's Greatest Shave time so grab your razor, grab your wallet, grab the moment…
Get sponsored or sponsor someone to shave or colour your/their hair between March 13 and 16 to help people with blood cancer. The World’s Greatest Shave is super important – it raises about half the money the Leukaemia Foundation needs to provide support for people with blood cancer and to fund research into prevention and cure.
More than 11,500 Australians will be diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or a related blood disorder in 2014. That’s 31 Aussies today, tomorrow and every other day who will receive the devastating news that they have blood cancer.
The good news is that survival rates are improving, the bad news is that blood cancers are the second biggest cause of cancer death in Australia. It’s all about caring and curing and the Leukaemia Foundation receives no ongoing government funding.
The beauty of sponsorship is that an individual can donate a significant amount with the support of the generosity of their family and friends who don’t have to dig too deep. It could be a gold coin from your school community, $5 or $10 from your workmates or $50 or $100 from someone special who will give you emotional and financial support
Every dollar helps but to give an idea of the power of donating – for example, $350 can provide 31 people with free emotional support to help overcome the initial shock of diagnosis… $500 can enable two patients and their carers to attend an educational or support program specific to their type of blood cancer.
It may be a case of hair today and gone tomorrow but the funds raised make it sooooo worthwhile. Be brave & shave!
