Anderson Simon and Sting sounds like a Parnell advertising agency but this trio refers to three legendary musicians heading to Auckland.

Aging Kiwi rockers are in for a Christmas and New Year treat with Ian Anderson (and band) performing at the Civic Theatre on December 20 & 21 and Sting and Paul Simon together on stage at Vector Arena on January 30.

Anderson Simon and StingOld friends Paul Simon and Sting on stage together should be a terrific show. Sting disbanded The Police quite a long while ago and Simon and Garfunkel had more splits than a gymnastic class and this new musical synergy came about through luck as much as evolution – they were asked to play together at a New York charity last year and it ‘worked’ – so much so that they went on tour in the US to rave reviews… and that’s the tour that comes to Auckland in February. Simon is 72 and Sting is 62…

Ian Anderson announced in April that his old band, Jethro Tull, had been despatched to the historical musical archive shelves and that he wants to be known, in his twilight years, simply as ‘Ian Anderson’, rather than as Mr Tull. He still performs the old Tull favourites like Thick as a Brick and Aqualung, some in very new arrangements, and there is new material as well. Tullophiles will remember young Gerald Bostock’s liner notes for the Thick as a Brick album… Gerald also made a comeback this year to write the cover notes to Ian’s latest solo album, Homo Erraticus. Gerald, of course, is a figment of Anderson’s imagination, which seems as fertile as ever. He is 66 years young, by the way…

If you are travelling from out of town for either show, Rydges Auckland can look after your accommodation needs.
