Elvis at 21If you plan to visit the national capital before March 9, there is a terrific photographic exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery (the permanent exhibition is also super-rewarding).

Back in 1956, photojournalist Alfred Wertheimer was hired by RCA Victor do publicity shots for a pretty unknown 21-year-old recording artist by the name of Elvis Presley. At this time Elvis could go into a diner and not be recognised. Wertheimer decided to ‘tag along’ with Presley after the assignment and what resulted were candid images of a real person, seemingly unaware of the camera – a real person but on the edge of reality – he was about to burst onto the music scene and become an icon.

Elvis at 21, Photographs by Alfred Wertheimer was developed collaboratively by the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery, the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, and Govinda Gallery, and is sponsored by HISTORY.
