Town Name: Jindabyne - from an Aboriginal word meaning ‘valley’.

Location: Snowy Mountains NSW, overlooking Lake Jindabyne, which is about half the size of Sydney Harbour. The lake and stunning mountains provide a spectacular backdrop.

Elevation: 918m above sea level (3000ft), making it one of the highest settlements in Australia.

Population: A tad less than 2000 people.

Distance to Ski Fields: Perisher and Thredbo, 30 minutes drive.

Summer Sports: Fishing, hiking, water skiing, canoeing, wakeboarding, horse riding.

History: The current township is modern, dating back to only 1967. The original township was where the lake now is but was relocated in the 1960’s during the damming of the Snowy River as part of the Snowy Mountains. The original settlement had a nice boost with the gold discoveries of the 1850’s – that resulted in a general store, a school and a police station. In 1894, Rainbow trout were released into the Snowy River, kicking off the fishing tradition that still flourishes today.
