There is a bit of a misconception that you have to head to the Queenstown and Coronet Peak region to get amongst great snow. Not necessarily. Nothing against our good friends over at Rydges Lakeland Queenstown but Canterbury skiing and snowboarding is fabulous, accessible and for beginners and experienced skiers alike.

Canterbury’s largest ski area, Mt Hutt is only 90 minutes from Christchurch and it has a world-class snow school and three terrain parks that are perfect for family fun or off-piste exhilaration. You can even take a chopper ride up to some terrific terrain for freeriding across three mountain ranges.

Selwyn 6 has six superb ski areas and is known as Canterbury’s best kept secrets. It’s tight on Christchurch’s doorstep (less than 90km from the city) and the six areas serve up a variety of experiences for skiers and snowboarders both gentle and adventurous. There’s also heli-accessed freeriding, uncrowded powder basins & chutes and relaxed family-friendly fun.

When the temperature drops and the white stuff starts to fall, Canterbury’s peaks become a winter playground and actually have more ski areas than anywhere in the southern hemisphere. And, of course, when looking for accommodation in Christchurch, Rydges Latimer will give you the warmest of winter welcomes.
