Over the past year the SMH has been sending out its resident caffeine connoisseurs to research for their Sydney Morning Herald Good Cafe Guide 2014 and they found a couple of North Sydney's Hot Coffee Spots. The guide is available with the SMH for $5 from selected newsagents on Saturday, June 21 or go online to the SMH Shop where it is $9.99.
They visited more than 300 cafes from north to south, east to west, tracking down wonderful venues - some with views of the ocean, some of parks, some in laneways and others in shopping arcades and basements. And they all had to have good coffee!
86 new entries made it into the compilation including The Incinerator in our neck of the woods. It is at 2 Small Street in Willoughby. The Incinerator was designed by Walter Burley Griffin in the 1930’s. Here’s what the SMH Guide had to say: The beautiful Art Deco bones of the building make for an elegant space, while the Grounds of Alexandria coffee and and fried egg and pork sausage breakfast burgers (not to mention the Tim Tam shake) keep crowds happy.
The other one just north of the bridge is the Anvil Coffee Co at the Kirribilli Commuter Wharf (Holbrook Avenue). The harbour view is simply stunning and the SMH suggests: Try the double espresso over coconut water and ice, dark chocolate shake or the tea of the month.
