THE RYDGES POST
Yep, when it comes to selfies, Her Majesty the Queen gets photobomb gold. Have a look at the cheeky old dear – she has actually placed herself in the background and looked down the lens with a beaming smile. Our Hockeyroos Jayde Taylor and Brooke Peris came away with more than a 4-0 win in their opening match!
Her Majesty also showed good humour during the Opening Ceremony when the officials were fumbling for the note for her to read and she has been thrilling the crowd of athletes brilliantly with casual banter. Our Sally Pearson was given a tap on the shoulder to hace a one-on-one chat and they both seemed to be having a fine old time. Hmm… is she working the room with a quiet campaign… there is a referendum in Scotland on September 18 to vote on whether the country should become independent from England.
Oh! And meanwhile another ‘Queen’ was strutting her stuff in the velodrome – our flagbearer and the queen of track cycling, Anna Meares, led from the front to win Australia’s first gold medal in the 500m time trial. It was a fabulous first day all round for Australia with 15 medals – five Gold, three Silver and seven Bronze – including a World Record in the pool for the Women’s 4 x 100 Freestyle Relay.
