On Friday, April 25, the ANZAC Day Services Sydney 2014 begin with the Dawn Service at the Cenotaph in Martin Place.

"ANZAC is not merely about loss. It is about courage, and endurance, and duty, and love of country, and mateship, and good humour and the survival of a sense of self-worth and decency in the face of dreadful odds." - Sir William Deane, Governor-General, ANZAC Day 1999

The first official Dawn Service in Martin Place was 1928 and 150 people attended.  This year the number will probably exceed 12,000.  There are a number of services and events throughout the day.

  • 4:30am: Dawn Service, Cenotaph, Martin Place
  • 9:00am: ANZAC Day March, George Street
  • 12:30pm: Commemoration Service, ANZAC Memorial
  • 5:00pm: Sunset Service, Cenotaph, Martin Place

Anzac Day marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. Commemorative services are held at dawn, the time of the original landings at Gallipoli and, later in the day, ex-servicemen and women meet and join in marches through the major cities and many smaller townships around the country. It is a day when Australians reflect on war, and peace, and on those who paid the ultimate sacrifice so we could continue living in a free country.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning,

We will remember them.

If you are visiting Sydney for the Anzac Day service(s) and/or looking for a relaxing long weekend, Rydges World Square, the new Rydges Sydney Central or Rydnes North Sydney can look after all your accommodation needs.
