You can catch Mark Seymour in Townsville with his band The Undertow at The Venue on Saturday, July 5.
Mark Seymour is what they call in horseracing circles, a stayer.
Born and bred in the Victorian country town of Benalla where he was tutored in classical piano, his deeply religious Catholic parents moved the family to Melbourne in 1972. There but for the gift of rebellion and risk-taking goes just another Australian schoolteacher. Luckily for us (and probably Mark) he dropped the piano for the guitar and found time to get into the pub music scene while studying. He found that there was much more excitement in music, volume and beer than nine-to-three chalk on blackboards. Don’t get me wrong, the world needs good teachers – but it also needs good singer-songwriters to both reflect and develop our culture.
In 1980, just as Mark was about to embark on that teaching career, he set up the iconic Aussie rock band Hunters & Collectors and for 18 years led the band to an amazing studio and live performance career. From 1998 he carved out another fabulous solo career where he recorded, produced, acted and composed.
He recently oversaw the reforming of Hunters & Collectors to tour with Bruce Springsteen and is now touring Australia with his band The Undertow on the back of his seventh album, Seventh Heaven Club. He’s a powerful performer who delivers solid, honest rock with a wry sense of humour never far away between songs.
Doors open at The Venue at 7:30pm, the support band plays from 8:00pm and Mark Seymour and The Undertow take to the stage at 9:0pm. If you are travelling from out of town for the concert, Rydges Townsville can look after all your accommodation needs.
