Our Commitment to Sustainability
Sustainability highlights at Rydges Wellington
At Rydges Wellington we’re choosing better for our customers, our communities, and our planet.
Our Commitment to Sustainability
We’re taking a fresh approach to a more sustainable stay in Wellington.Â
To keep nurturing our communities, local and far.Â
From the choices we make to the way we operate, we’re focused on doing better. Every day.Â
We’re building a more environmentally friendly hotel in Wellington, where sustainability isn’t just about the goals we set, light years away – it’s about the path we’re already on.Â
And at Rydges Wellington, we’re making it easier for our people, guests and partners to travel alongside us.Â
Together, the future’s bright. Â
How we're choosing better at Rydges Wellington
Sourcing responsibly
We are choosing suppliers and products that help us reduce our environmental impact while enhancing the guest experience.
- Reduced single-use plastics in a variety of ways, including:
- Bathroom amenities in refillable pump bottles.
- Water refill stations in our lobbies.
- Minibar plastic bottles replaced with glass bottles.
- Replaced plastic pens with a biodegradable paper-based product used in our conference & event spaces.
- At Portlander Restaurant & Bar, we prioritise seasonal, locally sourced ingredients and partner with suppliers who share our commitment to sustainability, including HomeGrown Juice, Jina’s Fresh Produce, Scotties Meats, Zealti Ice Cream, Prana Greens and Aro Bake.
Designing for the future
We’re building sustainability into the way we update and run the hotel.
- Installed electric vehicle charging stations for guests.
- Installed high-efficiency appliances during hotel upgrades.
- Utilise air conditioning systems with low-impact refrigerants.
- Transitioned from water-cooled to air-cooled chillers to reduce water consumption.
- Foster a culture of environmental stewardship through regular training, team engagement and community collaboration.
- Support the EVT Stretch Contributions program, enabling team members to donate to charitable organisations, including SPCA New Zealand and WWF New Zealand.
Playing our part
We’re choosing to respond to a changing climate, empower our people and customers to take part, and share our progress along the way.
- Introduced our Room Refresh program, rewarding guests with a $10 food & beverage voucher each night they choose to opt out of housekeeping, helping reduce water and energy consumption.
- Offer meeting room setups without notepads and pens unless requested, helping reduce unnecessary waste.
- Recycle paper, cardboard, glass, metals and most plastics across the hotel.
- Return packaging to suppliers wherever possible to support waste reduction and circular resource use.
Join us in choosing to protect our environment
You can help
We encourage our guests to choose to support sustainable tourism through the following simple actions:
- Save water and energy by joining our Room Refresh program and choosing to skip housekeeping and linen changes during your stay.
- Use energy efficiently by switching off lights, air conditioning and devices when leaving your room.
- Recycle where you can and help us reduce waste. At Rydges Wellington, we recycle paper, cardboard, glass, metals, most plastics, food waste and cooking oil.
- Refill your reusable water bottle and bring a reusable shopping bag when exploring Wellington to help reduce single-use plastics.
- Reduce your travel footprint by exploring Wellington on foot, by bike, or via public transport. If you're driving, consider a hybrid or electric vehicle, with EV charging facilities available in the Rydges Wellington valet car park.
- Travel mindfully by choosing locally made products and avoiding souvenirs derived from threatened species, heritage artefacts or culturally significant items.
