Our Commitment to Sustainability
We’re taking a fresh approach to a more sustainable stay in Fremantle.
To keep nurturing our communities, local and far.
From the choices we make to the way we operate, we’re focused on doing better. Every day.
We’re building a more environmentally friendly hotel in Fremantle, where sustainability isn’t just about the goals we set, light years away – it’s about the path we’re already on.
And at Esplanade Hotel Fremantle by Rydges, we’re making it easier for our people, guests and partners to travel alongside us.

How we’re choosing better at Esplanade Hotel Fremantle by Rydges
Sourcing responsibly
We are choosing suppliers and products that help us reduce our environmental impact while enhancing the guest experience.
- Water refill stations in our lobbies (and water jugs in your room).
- Minibar plastic bottles replaced with aluminium cans/glass bottles.
- Replaced plastic pens with a biodegradable paper-based product used in our conference & event spaces.
Designing for the future
We are building sustainability into the way we update and run the hotel.
- Installed energy-efficient LED lighting with motion sensors in smaller spaces.
- Provided electric vehicle charging stations for guests.
- Installed high-efficiency appliances during hotel upgrades.
- Utilise air conditioning systems with low-impact refrigerants.
- Transitioned from water-cooled to air-cooled chillers to reduce water consumption.
- Landscaped with native, drought-tolerant plants.
- Continue to invest in future-focused sustainability initiatives, including planned solar panel installation and a greywater system by 2027.
Playing our part
We are choosing to respond to a changing climate, empower our people and customers to take part, and share our progress along the way.
- Introduced our Room Refresh program, rewarding guests with a $10 food and beverage voucher each night they choose to opt out of housekeeping, helping reduce water and energy consumption.
- Introduced dual recycling bins in every guest room, making it easier for guests to separate recyclables during their stay.
- Made water refill stations available throughout the hotel to encourage reusable water bottles.
- Partner with Fremantle-based suppliers and producers, including Gage Roads Brewery, Republic of Fremantle Distillery and The Honeycake, to showcase the best of our local community.
- Work closely with cultural and tourism partners including Fremantle Prison and Rottnest Express, as well as the City of Fremantle, to support local events and experiences.
- Proudly support Perth Wildlife Hospital, helping protect and care for Western Australia’s unique wildlife.
- Support the EVT Stretch Contributions program, with team members donating to charitable organisations including RSPCA and WWF Australia, alongside matched hotel contributions.
- Foster a culture of environmental stewardship through regular training, team engagement and community collaboration.
You can help
Join us in choosing to protect our environment
Sustainability isn’t just a practice—it’s our vision. We encourage our guests to choose to support sustainable tourism through the following simple actions:
- Use water efficiently and choose to skip linen changes to save water and energy. Be rewarded with an F&B gift voucher as part of our Room Refresh initiative.
- Use energy efficiently and when leaving your room choose to make sure all lights, air conditioners and devices are switched off.
- Never litter and recycle where you can. Recycle bins for guest use are provided in all guest rooms and our public spaces.
- Use reusable water bottles to minimise use of single use plastics bottles and try to use reusable grocery bags when you go shopping.
- Reduce emissions, meet the locals and immerse yourself in the culture by using public transport.
- If renting a car, opt for smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles or hybrid or electric vehicles. Esplanade Hotel Fremantle provides EV charging facilities.
