We are committed to delivering meaningful guest experiences while actively reducing our environmental footprint and contributing to the community. Certified under the Quality Tourism Australia Framework for Sustainable Tourism and rated 4.5 Stars NABERS for electricity, our operations reflect a high standard of sustainability and innovation.

Our initiatives focus on five key pillars: waste management, reduction of single-use items, energy and water conservation, guest engagement, and team education. We have already diverted over 50% of our waste from landfill, with a target of 60% by 2026. Single-use plastics have been phased out hotel-wide, and we are investing in high-efficiency systems—including LED lighting, upgraded HVAC, and EV charging stations—to reduce energy and water consumption by 10% annually.

In addition, supporting our local community is at the heart of what we do. We proudly partner with Fremantle-based suppliers and producers—including Gage Roads Brewery, Republic of Fremantle Distillery, and The Honeycake—to showcase the best of our region to guests. Our collaborations extend to cultural and tourism partners such as Fremantle Prison and Rottnest Express, while our strong relationship with the City of Fremantle allows us to support local events and offer exclusive accommodation benefits. By choosing local first, we not only deliver authentic Fremantle experiences but also contribute directly to the growth and vibrancy of our community.

Guests also play a central role in our efforts. Through our “Room Refresh” program, dual recycling bins in rooms, and water refill stations throughout the hotel, we make it easy for visitors to make sustainable choices during their stay. Internally, we foster a culture of environmental stewardship through regular training, staff incentives, and community collaboration. Our team also participates in the EVT Stretch Contributions program, donating a portion of their weekly pay to charitable organisations—including biodiversity conservation funds such as RSPCA and WWF Australia—with the hotel matching contributions in kind.

We encourage our guests to choose to support sustainable tourism through the following simple actions:

• We encourage our guests to help protect Fremantle’s unique coastal and island ecosystems by observing wildlife respectfully, keeping a safe distance, not feeding animals, and leaving natural areas such as Rottnest Island and Bathers Beach as you found them to preserve their beauty for future visitors.
• Use water efficiently and choose to skip linen changes by opting into Room Refresh to save water and energy and be rewarded with a $10 food & beverage voucher.
• Use energy efficiently and when leaving your room choose to make sure all lights, air conditioners and devices are switched off.
• Never litter, and recycle where you can. At Esplanade Hotel Fremantle, our teams separate recyclables, and recycle bins for guest use are provided in both public spaces and in all guest rooms.
• Use reusable water bottles to minimise use of single use plastics bottles – we have complimentary water stations available in the lobby for you to refill your water bottles.
• Reduce emissions, meet the locals and immerse yourself in the culture by using public transport, or one of the electric bicycles we have for hire by the entrance.
• If renting a car, opt for smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles or hybrid or electric vehicles. Esplanade Hotel Fremantle provides EV charging facilities.
• Esplanade Hotel Fremantle encourages guests to consider the origin of items when purchasing souvenirs while travelling and to avoid purchasing any heritage artefacts or items derived from rare or threatened species.
