Our Commitment to Sustainability
Sustainability highlights at Rydges Formosa Auckland Golf Resort
At Rydges Formosa Auckland Golf Resort we’re choosing better for our customers, our communities, and our planet.
Our Commitment to Sustainability
We’re taking a fresh approach to a more sustainable stay in Rotorua.
To keep nurturing our communities, local and far.
For us, sustainability is not only about the goals we set for the future. It is also about the practical choices we make today.
And at Rydges Formosa Golf Resort, we are making it easier for our people, guests and partners to travel alongside us as we reduce waste, use resources responsibly, support our local community and protect the natural environment of Auckland’s Pōhutukawa Coast.
Together, the future is bright.
How we're choosing better at Rydges Formosa Golf Resort
Sourcing responsibly
We are choosing suppliers and products that help us reduce our environmental impact while enhancing the guest experience.
- Reduced single-use plastics in a variety of ways, including:
- Bathroom amenities in refillable pump dispensers.
- Filtered drinking water stations available for guests and golfers.
- Single-use plastic water bottles replaced with glass bottles.
- Work with suppliers that provide products in reusable kegs, cooler boxes and returnable packaging.
- Support circular resource use by having used cooking oil collected by Oil2U for reuse and repurposing.
- Replaced plastic stationery pens with biodegradable paper-based alternatives and select plant-based takeaway products where practical.
- Offer reusable water bottles and coffee cups for purchase to help reduce single-use waste.
- Where practical, our food and beverage team partners with local suppliers and champions locally sourced, seasonal products.
- Our local suppliers include locally brewed beer and onsite honey supplied by a professional beekeeper.
- Purchase recycled cleaning cloths through a local company that supports young adults with disabilities.
Designing for the future
We’re building sustainability into the way we update and run the hotel.
- Installed energy-efficient LED lighting across the property, including sensor-controlled lighting in selected Pavilion areas, with further energy-efficiency upgrades underway.
- Prioritise energy and water-efficient appliances when equipment is replaced.
- Use water-tolerant planting throughout the villa areas, reducing the need for irrigation.
- Installed water-saving shower heads and regularly inspect and repair leaks to help reduce water consumption.
- Follow shutdown procedures for lighting, air conditioning and appliances in areas that are not in use.
- Use digital documents, QR codes, electronic reporting and emailed guest communications where practical to reduce printing.
- Provide two electric vehicle charging stations for guests.
Playing our part
We’re choosing to respond to a changing climate, empower our people and customers to take part, and share our progress along the way.
- Introduced our Room Refresh program, rewarding guests with a $10 food and beverage voucher each night they choose to opt out of housekeeping, helping reduce water and energy consumption.
- Provide dual waste and recycling bins in guest rooms, with additional recycling facilities available throughout the property.
- Funded 20 native trees through Trees That Count, supporting native restoration and biodiversity.
- Foster a culture of environmental stewardship through regular training, team engagement and community collaboration, with sustainability initiatives shared through team meetings, noticeboards and EVT’s internal channels.
- Support the EVT Stretch Contributions program, enabling team members to contribute to approved community and conservation partners.
- Support local community and sporting initiatives, including sponsorships that help local young people participate in football.
- Encourage team members to take part in regional planting and coastal care activities.
- Partner with local suppliers and service providers wherever practical, helping support businesses across Beachlands and the wider Auckland region.
Rydges Formosa acknowledges Māori as the tangata whenua of Aotearoa New Zealand and recognises the importance of respecting local culture, heritage and the natural environment. We also recognise the connection of Ngāi Tai ki Tāmaki with the local area.
Join us in choosing to protect our environment
You can help
We encourage our guests to choose to support sustainable tourism through the following simple actions:
- Save water and energy by joining our Room Refresh program and choosing to skip housekeeping and linen changes during your stay.
- Use energy efficiently by switching off lights, air conditioning and devices when leaving your room.
- Recycle where you can and help us reduce waste. Separate recyclables from general waste utilising the dual bins located in your rooms – our housekeeping team will take care of the rest.
- Refill your reusable water bottle at our onsite drinking water station. Whether you're staying with us or enjoying a round of golf, it's a simple way to help reduce single-use packaging. Reusable water bottles are also available for purchase from our Grab & Go.
- Reduce your travel footprint and discover Beachlands like a local by walking, cycling or choosing lower-emission transport options where possible. If you're driving, consider a hybrid or electric vehicle, with EV charging stations available on-site.
- Travel mindfully by choosing locally made products and avoiding souvenirs derived from threatened species, heritage artefacts or culturally significant items.
