Sustainability at Rydges Wellington Airport
Our Commitment to Sustainability
We’re taking a fresh approach to a more sustainable stay in Wellington.
To keep nurturing our communities, local and far.
From the choices we make to the way we operate, we’re focused on doing better. Every day.
We’re building a more environmentally friendly hotel in Wellington, where sustainability isn’t just about the goals we set, light years away – it’s about the path we’re already on.
And at Rydges Wellington Airport, we’re making it easier for our people, guests and partners to travel alongside us.
Together, the future’s bright.

How we’re choosing better at Rydges Wellington Airport
Sourcing responsibly
We are choosing suppliers and products that help us reduce our environmental impact while enhancing the guest experience.
- Bathroom amenities in refillable pump bottles.
- Compostable shower caps throughout the hotel.
- Water refill stations available in our lobby.
- Takeaway coffee cups and lids made from plant-based, certified home-compostable materials.
- Prioritise seasonal, locally sourced ingredients and partner with suppliers from the Wellington & Wairapa region who share our commitment to sustainability, helping support local producers and showcase the best of the region.
- Support local suppliers, producers and service providers wherever practical.
Together, these steps show that small, thoughtful choices, whether in sourcing, service or day-to-day operations, can create a big difference for our planet and community.
Designing for the future
We are building sustainability into the way we update and run the hotel.
- Installed energy-efficient LED lighting throughout the property, including motion-sensor lighting in selected areas.
- Installed water-saving fixtures, including low-flow taps and dual-flush toilets, to help reduce water consumption.
- Prioritise energy and water-efficient equipment when replacing assets.
- Transitioned from water-cooled to air-cooled chillers to reduce water consumption.
- Monitor greenhouse gas emissions annually and work towards EVT’s Group emissions reduction targets.
- Implemented a paperless check-in process, with invoices emailed directly to guests to help reduce paper consumption.
We’re reducing waste and increasing recycling across our operations by:
- Separating cardboard and organic food waste from general waste to minimise our impact on landfill.
- Recycling bottles and cans across our food and beverage and conferencing operations, with recycling options also available to guests.
- Recycling print cartridges, batteries, computer parts and old mobile phones, helping keep hazardous materials out of landfill.
Playing our part
We are responding to a changing climate, empower our people and customers to take part, and share our progress along the way.
- Introduced our Room Refresh program, rewarding guests with a $10 food & beverage voucher each night they choose to opt out of housekeeping, helping reduce water and energy consumption.
- Removed printed guest directories, room service menus and minibar information from guest rooms, making them available digitally through our Liverton platform.
- Staff training: all staff complete and have access to the Sustainability @EVT e-module.
- Support Autism New Zealand through a number of channels, from fundraising efforts to free of charge conferencing hosted on site.
- Support the EVT Stretch Contributions program, enabling team members to donate to causes close to their hearts, including Cancer Society, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Mental Health NZ, SPCA New Zealand and Starship Foundation.
- Support biodiversity, conservation and environmental restoration initiatives in local communities.
By combining environmental initiatives with community support, we’re creating a holistic approach to sustainability, one that values people as much as the planet.
You can help
Join us in choosing to protect our environment
We encourage our guests to choose to support sustainable tourism through the following simple actions.
- Save water and energy by joining our Room Refresh program and choosing to skip housekeeping and linen changes during your stay.
- Recycle where you can and help us reduce waste. We separate cardboard, bottles, cans and organic waste to minimise what goes to landfill.
- Reduce your travel footprint and experience Wellington like a local by walking, cycling, using public transport, or choosing a hybrid or electric vehicle. EV charging stations are available for guests on Level 1 of the airport parking structure.
- Use energy efficiently by switching off lights, air conditioning and devices when leaving your room.
- Refill your reusable water bottle and bring a reusable shopping bag when exploring Wellington to help reduce single-use plastics.
- Travel mindfully by choosing locally made products and avoiding souvenirs derived from threatened species, heritage artefacts or culturally significant items.
