The Roundhouse
Celebrating 175 years in 2006, the Round House is Western Australia’s oldest public building.
Built in 1831, the Round House was used to install navigation lights and a signalling station. In 1900 a time ball was installed as part of a procedure to give mariners and residents an exact daily time of 1pm.
The Fremantle Heritage Guides provide tours of the Round House precinct for visitors. Not only can you hear about the history, but enjoy sweeping views of the city, Fishing Boat Harbour, the port over Bathers Beach and the Indian Ocean.
